Entrances, elevators, vending machines, corridors, stairways, underground passageways, and commercial signage regulate movement through systems that appear ordinary yet remain psychologically charged. Hospitality becomes choreography. Ordinariness becomes cover. Across the series, visible surfaces coexist with buried histories and concealed infrastructures that continue to shape movement, access, and perception beneath the contemporary city. The series begins within the reconstructed landscape of Chinzanso Garden in Tokyo’s Bunkyō Ward, a site shaped by cycles of destruction, displacement, and renewal. Much of the garden was destroyed during the air raids of 1945 before being rebuilt through extensive postwar cultivation. At night, illumination isolates fragments — trees, pathways, the pagoda — suspending them within fields of darkness. What appears continuous by day withdraws in parts after nightfall. The garden embodies a form of cultural resilience in which survival and carefully cultivated beauty depend not on full exposure, but on regrowth, rebuilding, selective illumination, and the preservation of displaced histories that continue to evoke both perseverance and vulnerability.
